Tsukiji Fish Market
In 2016 during a trip to Japan, Alex gained limited access to the restricted area of Tsukiji Fish Market where he took the opportunity to document this famous and now historic market, which served as a fundamental part of Tokyo's and the surrounding area's Sushi supply chain where millions of Yen were spent every day in its auction rooms. Sadly in a controversial move and after 83 years in operation the market has now closed and has moved to a new purpose built site away from the heart of the city. It’s a move which represents the changing times, a desire to lock doors and separate the public from our food industry. It’s a common trend across the globe but with the historic culinary importance japan places on its food and particularly sushi, it might mean some of the cultural significance will be lost.
